Design of Wet Dust Collectors

Gas-humidification, gas-liquid contact (inertial impaction, interception, diffusion, or condensation nucleation), or gas-liquid separation are the three fundamental configurations of all types of wet dust collectors. After collection, the "cleaned" or "scrubbed" gasses are typically run through a demister to eliminate the extra water droplets. Then, the contaminated water is treated and released into the environment or recycled into the dust collector.

A clarity unit or drag tank chain is used to remove the dust, and the latter will also extract the sludge and put it in a bin or stockpile. The gravity-spray-power scrubber is one kind of low-energy wet dust collector. This scrubber gathers liquid droplets that have been atomized and fall through rising exhaust fumes after forming in its spray nozzles.

At the bottom, contaminated water is drained. Gravity-spray-power scrubbers are only around 70% effective on particles smaller than 10 μm and perform badly below this size. However, they do not clog while treating moderately high dust concentrations. The wet cyclone, which spins dust particles and launches them onto its wetted wall using centrifugal force, illustrates a low-to-medium energy wet dust collector. The dust is then washed away by water injected from the top. These collectors are effective for particles with a diameter of 5 μm or larger.

Considerations When Choosing Wet Dust Collectors

  • The type of dust is the first consideration. If the dust is sticky or hygroscopic, it's crucial that the equipment not clog under any working conditions. Wet dust collectors are better suited for these applications since baghouse dust collectors can clog when the material is sticky or the humidity level increases. Metalworking shops frequently produce fumes, so a commercial dust collector that can "double-duty" with both dust and fumes is a great solution.
  • The particles themselves make up the second factor. Are there any ragged edges, fine fibers, or other harmful characteristics (common with metal fines)? When exposed to abrasive material, certain dust collection devices use cloth that can soon deteriorate.
  • Is the dust corrosive? As a result, several kinds of industrial dust collectors should not be used. Different steel alloys may be considered if the temperature is high. For corrosive dust, polypropylene dust collectors may be the best solution.

  • Reduced Odor: Regular air circulation and refreshment keep odorous pollutants out of a dust collection system. Although dust collection devices can get confused with air conditioners, they have many advantages. Filtration removes the pollutants and the smells that are produced by contaminated air. Not all dust collection systems have odor reduction as a standard feature. Filters with carbon impregnation are utilized when an odor is a concern.
  • Respiratory Fitness: The safety of the workplace for employees is one of the main concerns for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). They have particular guidelines about the permitted percentage of particles in a cubic foot of air concerning dust and pollutants.
